[FreeRTOS Home] [Live FreeRTOS Forum] [FAQ] [Archive Top] [July 2009 Threads] [Off Topic]Mailing List ComplaintPosted by Çağlar Akyüz on July 15, 2009 Writing mail to SF mailing lists, maybe I should say forum, is a real pain for me. I shouldn't be the only one thinking this. It would be good if freertos may switch to a real mailing list management system, though I'm not sure if it is possible or not.
Sorry for the noise, I just wanted to mention.

RE: [Off Topic]Mailing List ComplaintPosted by kurator on July 15, 2009 I would agree, there are better mailing lists out there. btw. If you want to search the forum: Move your mouse pointer over the forum icon and select search. Took me a while to figure it out ;-)
RE: [Off Topic]Mailing List ComplaintPosted by Richard on July 15, 2009 I put in a request to SourceForge years ago to be able to reply to posts using email, without having to come to the WEB interface.
I'm told that the whole forum system is being replaced with a more standard PHP BB system, but I'm not sure when. The issue for me is there is a lot of good information contained in this forum (if you can work out how to search it, which is not obvious), and moving to a new system would either require loosing this information or migrating it.
Regards.
RE: [Off Topic]Mailing List ComplaintPosted by Alain Mouette on July 15, 2009 What I miss most in this forum (and almost all) is that the email should contain a link to read the whole thread before answering.
As it is now, it is quite difficult to do that. If that link was in the reply page (online) it would already be better than now.
RE: [Off Topic]Mailing List ComplaintPosted by incrediball on July 15, 2009 It's all a matter of taste. I prefer this style of forum over mailing lists. I was in the uIP mailing list for a few weeks and it drove me mad. I also prefer the view where all the messages are displayed instead of having click around in some sort of tree structure and keep track of where you've been and what was interesting.
That's not to say that this one is perfect. Where did the indenting go when someone answered a particular post? Also, what's with the silly 5 line high textbox where I'm typing in this message? Another thing that would be nice is to use tags like in the IMDB forum. Oh, and a preview would be nice...
RE: [Off Topic]Mailing List ComplaintPosted by Richard on July 15, 2009 The small text box is a new thing - but you can drag it to whatever size you like. Just drag the bottom right corner.
Regards.
RE: [Off Topic]Mailing List ComplaintPosted by Çağlar Akyüz on July 16, 2009 While it's a matter of taste, it is more of a matter of general workflow. These days most of the software projects, even smaller projects then FreeRTOS tend to use real mailing lists for many various reasons:
1) I can not seperately answer to you and to Richard Barry's post to say that textbox resizing does not work on every browser/platform. I remember using some sort of quoting in the old interface but I cannot find it now.
2) If this was a real mailing list, you would be using your own preferred mail client for reading, composing, etc which may be better provider to general "matter of taste"
3) Last but not the least, reading, asking and answering is easier and more quick.
These are my personal ideas(and wish list). I know it may incur more burden on maintainer's shoulders though using a Google mailing list may make life easier in this respect.
Regards, Caglar
RE: [Off Topic]Mailing List ComplaintPosted by incrediball on July 16, 2009 Enlarging the silly textbox doesn't work in Firefox, at least not on mine anyway.
On the other hand the continuous flow of emails during the day can be almost as disturbing as spam. I prefer to have a quick look through the forum once a day or so when I feel like it or have the time. Not everything is interesting for me nor is it all something that I can comment on.
Doesn't this forum have the option of sending emails? If not, that would be something to complain about.
RE: [Off Topic]Mailing List ComplaintPosted by Richard on July 16, 2009 Yes the forum will send out an email of each post if you subscribe. What's missing is the ability to reply via email.
I'm using Chrome, and can resize the box.
Regards.
